The Kingdom of Tonga is an unspoiled and virtually “undiscovered” chain of jewels located in the South Pacific. The last remaining autocratic island kingdom on earth, Tonga is comprised of approximately 175 islands separated into three primary island groups that span several hundred miles. Tonga lies south of the equator; directly to the south of Samoa; east of Fiji; and west of the Cook Islands and Tahiti.

Tonga and, in particular the Vava’u island group, is an incredible destination for sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing and swimming with the whales that migrate there annually to give birth to their young.

Situated on ‘Ofu, an island with only 100 residents in the Vava’u Island Group, the Melino Resort & Writers Wranch is a prime piece of island property with a long sandy beach, a protected boat landing and 7+ acres of lush tropical vegetation with a wide variety of fruit trees, including mango, papaya, bread fruit and banana. The main lodge features a colonial style veranda overlooking the crystal clear water and another smaller neighboring island a few hundred yards away.

The resort was formerly operated as the Mahina Lodge Resort, however, it has been closed since 2002 and very little maintenance has been done to the property since. In addition to the main lodge, there are six “fales” (bungalows) and multiple supply and storage buildings.

The Melino Resort & Writers Wranch will become an exclusive getaway catering to people in search of a private and quiet place to escape and pursue creative expression. “Melino” in the Tongan native language means “peace” and “serenity” and those virtues will be primary benefits for future resort guests (in addition to the incredible scenery and the tropical climate, of course).

The entire resort will be rebuilt to luxury resort standards, beginning with the main lodge. Native hard woods and natural materials will be used extensively with a planned result equaling the finest resort accommodations found in the Tahitian islands, Fiji or any place else in the South Pacific. Individual fales will feature private baths and kitchenettes, as well as ocean-facing lanais. Tentative occupancy date is May, 2009.
